Where is 70 km/h? You need to know the maximum speed

Since January 2017, the maximum speed on regional roads has been reduced from 90 kilometers per hour to 70 kilometers per hour. The Flemish Minister of Transport hopes that this measure will tackle the proliferation of traffic signs and reduce the number of road deaths. They believe that less chaos means more security. You still need to be aware of speed limits.

Why limit the speed to 70 km / h?

Before January 2017, you are allowed to drive outside built-up areas at a speed of 90 km/h. However, this rule is already more exceptional than the rule. Due to the enormous pressure on the accelerator outside the construction area, the speed is limited to 70 km / h on many roads. However, to prevent the spread of these signs, the standard speed outside built-up areas is now 70 kilometers per hour. This simplification allows many road signs to be removed, about 30,000. This rule applies from now on: where there is no sign, the standard speed for regional roads is 70 km / h.

Is there no place over 90 km/h?

Regional roads with a speed of 90 km / h used to be an exception, but are now a reality. If a higher maximum speed is allowed, this can be clearly indicated. If the regional road has a separate bicycle path and the trees or wide buildings along the road do not endanger road safety, a higher speed limit may apply.

Violation: a fine of 80 euros

Because many GPS systems have not yet adapted to the new speed standards, many drivers still drive at 90 km / h, with 70 being the standard speed. Then a not so good-looking letter finally appeared in the post: if you drive at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour on a regional road, you can get a fine of 80 euros.
